Well, I've been where you are! It used to be so rediculous because we would spend 2-300 dollars and be out of food within a week! I'm also not a good cook, but I'm learning! here are my tips, take them for what their worth, but I've learned a lot these last 3 years! In my house it's me, my hubby, my 3 1/2 year old, and my 9month old, a cat, a dog (half beagle, half cocker-spaniel, so medium sized) and a fish that never dies (seriously, we forget to feed it for like 3 weeks and it's still here! lol)

Right now, I spend roughly $200 2x a month, but that includes EVERYTHING, including medicines, cleaners, etc.

Now I don't buy everything cheap, but I try to shop smarter. I plan ahead and make a list. It helps me to create menus for the next 2 weeks of meals (I sit down and ask what everyone wants for dinner and then i make a list of everything i need to buy to make those meals. then I pick up basics for lunches (bread, lunchmeat, peanutbutter & jelly, mac-n-cheese, spagetti-o's, etc.) Then I add in snacks- I ask my hubby for a few snack ideas. I try to keep this to a minimum so i don't overbuy. Then, I add in cat & dog food, formula, diapers, cleaners, etc. It is best to keep a list in a place like the fridge so as you run out of something (like deodorant) you can write it down. This keeps me from having to go back for things i forgot we needed and spending more than i budgeted for.

Then, stick to your list. buying items you don't need or on the fly ALWAYS costs you more $$ than you intended. Also, coupons are a great way to save extra $$, but I totally get that not only are they annoying, you might also buy things you don't actually need just because you have a coupon for it!

Another thing is, figure how much do you use something? If you don't use paper towel very often, buy the cheap stuff. If you do, make sure you are getting the most on the roll for your $$. don't be swayed by gimicks of "softness" or "quilted". Toilet paper was like this for me. i used to buy scott brand because it lasted forever, but it was much like wiping with paper towel in my hubby's opinion. and it was expensive. so i switched to angel soft. yes it was cheap, but I had to buy the big 24 pack every 2 weeks, it was crazy! after a while, it's not so cheap anymore. So i finally found a balance and buy charmin basic now. 12 double rolls, and it lasts me a month or so.

Now, i don't buy organic, and I don't make my own baby food. I buy huggies diapers when i have a coupon, and pampers wipes. My dog eats kibbles and bits or dog chow (whichever is cheaper at the time) I buy the big bag of mixed chips snacks (the individual portion sizes) to control my hubby's snacking- portion control is easier than watching him eat out of the big bags LOL. I buy pepsi and bottled water, and amish noodles (yum!). So no, we don't eat "cheap" food, but i have learned to shop smarter over the years! I have gone to save-a-lot on occasion, but I have found here lately, sometimes their prices aren't any better than walmart's!

Ok, I know this is EXTREMELY long and i'm sorry! haha I just know what it's like to be in your shoes and get so frustrated with the grocery bill, and it seems you have nothing to show for it at the end of the week! And when hubby eats everything as if you're magically always going to have more- it gets very frustrating! =) I have a lot more ideas and ways to cook at home very cheap and easy too! If you want, feel free to e-mail me sometime! Also, I'm on facebook :) Good luck to you! i hope you can get a system worked out for ya!

(oh, and by the way, keep track for one month how much you eat out- I found out we used to spend like $80 a week on groceries, then around $300 a month eating out because it never seemed like we had food in the house. Or we had cheap food like mac-n-cheese or ramen noodles. Now we cut back our eating out to once a week if that, and put about $200 extra into our grocery bill. it saves us $ in the long run, and even though i don't always cook "healthy" at home, it is generally healthier for us in the long run, and my daughter isn't living off of chicken nuggets and french fries anymore!)
References :
Me, a mom 28 years old. my hubby is 29, and we have a very picky toddler, and a baby who eats (and poops) A LOT :)

Oh I live in the UK . Sorry if this doesnt help. For now it just consists of me ! lol :). And my soon to be born baby :). One a month , I go to COSTCO to get all the things that I need, in bigger portions to store in the pantry and garage etc. Or , If Im having a dinner party or something similar. But weekly, I usually go to ASDA and TESCO and all them lot. For now, I only spend around £90 a week. But, I work as a chef and so it may be a bit more expensive. Also, I buy some baby foods and stuff like that for my nephew who I usually watch. Going to COSTCO helps alot ! :)

It's just my husband, daughter and I. We spend between $70-100 a week. I never make a list, I just go isle to isle and grab what seems appetizing at the time lol
References :
That's about what I spend which is about twice as much as we originally had budgeted for that. We did up it to $300 per month so we'll see how that goes. $100/week is actually very good. Groceries are getting so expensive and then if you try to eat healthy it's even more expensive. It's ridiculous that healthy food is more expensive than junk food. I've been shopping at a warehouse store so I buy like 4 lbs of hamburger and it's cheaper that way and I just freeze it and then thaw when I need it. I also buy all my diapers, wipes, baby food, etc there which is cheaper than even wal-mart which is pretty darn cheap. Also buy toilet paper and paper towels there in bulk. I go there every two weeks and spend about $150.

I have realized recently that I keep getting pampers coupons and the warehouse store allows you to use as many coupons as you want for one item, there is no limit on them. So I end up saving like 50% on diapers and wipes just from using coupons. Definitely start keeping your eyes peeled for those. My neighbor across the street is a SAHM and she clips coupons from the paper and they say that they save like $20-30 per week on groceries. It's definitely worth a shot. One of our grocery stores here has BOGOo free every week.

I was proud of myself last week because they had the long lighters BOGO free plus each one had a $1.00 off coupon on it, so with the BOGO and both coupons we got them both for $1.50, and they were originally $3.50 each. I love when I find deals like that. :)
References :
I think it really depends on where you live. I was living in AB Canada and my husband and I were spending around $150-$200 a week on groceries because it was so expensive where we lived. I am now in ON Canada and groceries here for my mom, dad, hubby, me and our 8 month old is about $150 a week. Its so much cheaper here. Some ideas to save money is stock up when you can and things are on sale. If toilet paper is on sale for a good price instead of buying 1 pack get a few packs. I also stock up on laundry soap. My hubby's fav soap was on sale for $2.99 (regular $7) so I got like 5 of them. Buy things in bulk too. You might pay Like $12 for a family size pack of chicken breasts then split them up and put them in freezer bags. Another good way to save is make a weekly meal plan so you only buy what you need for the week. No picking up things that you dont end up using. Its a pain but it does save. Make a grocery list and stick to it. My husband is a junk food nut too so what I do is limit what he gets. Say 2 bags of chips a week and once they are gone thats it till the next week.
References :
My family consists of myself. my husband and my eight month old son. He just started eating solids and I have been feeding him fruit and that is a little expensive, but worth it. My husband is a god send because he doesn't need anything expensive and will eat almost anything. If you are spending a hundred dollars are you wasting a lot of food? We spend 60 dollars a week on groceries and try not to waste a thing. Try to cut your budget down by buying something one week and then something else another week. One day cook three meals so you don't have to cook for a couple of days and just eat those. Don't make too big of portions so you are not wasting what you spend. You also don't have to cut coupons, sometimes I shop at various stores to save money.
References :
Right now it about to change. I living with my parents. I only bought food for me and my 3 kids. It was hard to live off 60 dollars a week on groceries. Now I am currently about to move soon. That I will be living with my boyfriend and his daughter. That will be family of 6. So this put me on the tight spot. My boyfriend drinks a lot of milk. About going to 2 or 3 gallons i'm sure. I hoping to buy some stuff in bulk or something, I usually go into 1 loaf of bread or two loafs of bread.
My youngest daughter is a failure to thrive baby. So at times I mostly buy her own food for her to eat that high calories food for her to eat. I try to get best deals I can. I go to alidi's walmart and krogers. I look at ads before going to the store. I go through 3 boxes of diapers a month and 2 full boxes of wipes per month has well. That expensive has well.
References :
We actually spend about $100 a week on groceries too....includes two adults, a 14 month old, and two huge dogs. I live on the E coast in a big metro, so I think I do pretty well to keep the bill that low in this area.

Tips:
-Start cutting coupons! (or grab them when offered in the store) IF it is something you will buy. I cut a lot of coupons for different meats, side dishes, and veggies. I LOVE chicken, but if I can buy sausage for cheaper with a coupon, I'd rather do that.

-Buy discount/sale items. I even had a cashier tell me, "Oooo I don't EVER buy discount meat." Well, guess what? I do...and I save a ton of money and haven't died yet.

-Buy bulk, when it makes sense. Clearly, gushers in bulk would make sense in your home! Paper goods, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. are also good items to buy in bulk.

-You don't have to learn how to "cook." Buy a bag of chicken thighs, a couple boxes of mac-n-cheese/pork-n-beans, and a bag of frozen veggies....that should make about 5 days worth of dinner for your family.

-Be okay with generic items. (except toilet paper...sorry, I'm frugal but even I can't do that!)

-Make a list and stick with it. I spend far less when I do this.

-Take your time and price compare. Take a calculator if you need to, although most stores have the price per ounce, etc. listed. I know it is harder to move that slow with a little one, but the savings do add up.

-Best advice EVER: Do NOT go to the grocery store hungry. Ever. I buy so much junk I don't need when I haven't eaten lunch or whatever before hand. Eat something first!!!
References :
My family is myself 24yo, husband 23yo, son 5yo, daughter 1yo and dog 3yo.

We go shopping every 2 weeks and spend around $150. $175 on weeks with dog food. We have started cutting coupons, so that might save $10 or so ...
References :
Before my husband and I had our son, we had a budget of $90 a week, and we would never hit that, unless we spoiled ourselves. We used to plan our dinners, and it was so much easier.
Now, with a little one, we're eating a lot more frozen foods, and with diapers, wipeys and formula (...and the list goes on), our cheapest bill is $150. Oye!
